Description

Authorized in 1878, the Model 1879 sword was first manufactured in 1879. It differs from the Model 1872 in that the folding counterguard was eliminated in favor of a fixed guard. This sword has an early type of Springfield address, possibly 1879-80. SWP is stamped on the drag (Samuel W. Porter), inspector 1879 until his death in 1894. 205 swords were manufactured at the Amory from 1879-80, 852 1883-86, 500 1889-90, 1,000 1892, and 1301 1900-03, for a total of 3,858 M1879 swords. CONDITION: The hilt and scabbard mounts retain about 99% of the gilt, the wire on the grip is perfect as is the sharkskin, the blade is near mint with just a small spot on the obverse ricasso, there are no dents on the scabbard but the nickel plate is somewhat worn or flaking.
