Description
A type 1 artillery saber by Horstmann & Sons. Type 1 sabers have scabbards without throat pieces but instead the scabbard fits into a padded recess cut into the hilt. This saber has leather grips and a plain blade, which is typical with leather grips. These swords are of Civil War vintage and possibly earlier. Markings are clear with HORSTMANN / & SONS stamped on the reverse ricasso and PHILADELPHIA stamped on the obverse. Blade lenght is 31 3/4 inches and the width at the ricasso is 1 3/8 inches. Condition: The leather grip and wire is perfect, There is a dent on the reverse side of the pommel cap ( see pictures). No gilt remains on the hilt. The blade is a mixture of bright steel and patina, surfaces are smooth.. There are a couple of tiny nicks in the blade. The plain blued steel scabbard has 3 minor dents on the reverse side.
