U. S. CENTE GARDE Cavalry saber (Civil War). The Federal Government bought two of these sabers for evaluation and did not pursue things further. However, the military goods firm, Schuyler, Hartley, & Graham, imported these swords and they are listed in their catalog of the time. The CENTE GARDE sword for the American market were made of French parts with an American eagle placed in the guard. . For further information on this sword, I recommend CIVIL WAR CAVALRY & ARTILLERY SABERS by John Thillmann. (Schuyley, Hartley, & Graham section). A scarce and rather obscure sword CONDITION: The sword is in overall nice condition, There is no gilt on the brass hilt and not sure the ever was, the thorn wood grip is in fine condition, the plain, straight double grooved blade is a mix of bright steel and patina. No original luster but no pitting. The browned steel scabbard has several minor dents that do not impede the blade. SHIPPING: $40.00
