Description

Little is known about this scarce saber stamped F.A.R. & C. John Thillmann in “CIVIL WAR CAVALRY & ARTILLERY SABERS” is of the opinion that the stamping is of a retailer not a maker. Perhaps the sword was imported from Germany but there is no maker’s mark. The hilt is deeply cast with well done embellishments. The blade is 33 1/2 ” long and 1 2/16″ wide at the ricasso. The etching on the blade is very well done with the usual floral and military trophy motifs. An American eagle and E PLURIBUS UNUM graces the obverse with a large US on the reverse. Condition: Surprisingly the hilt does not retain any gilding and it is possible there never was any. The grip’s sharkskin covering and wire is complete and in good condition. The bright blade shows a lot of original finish. The plain steel scabbard is browned with normal wear to the finish. No rust, no dents, no dings. Please see the pictures. Shipping is $40.00
