Description
Manufactured by Ames of Cabotville, Ma. and dated 1846, this early NCO sword is more robust with a slightly wider and thicker blade than later swords. When delivered to the government, this sword had a leather scabbard but now has one made of iron as its original scabbard wore out. NOTE: These early swords will not fit into a later leather scabbard. Marks: Obverse Ricasso-US and NWP (inspector Nathan W. Patch), Reverse Ricasso-what remains of the Ames address and a deep stamped 1846, Obverse Knucklebow-NWP, Reverse Knucklebow- WAT (William A. Thornton). The blued scabbard?s drag is stamped DFM (Dexter F. Mossman, a Civil War inspector). An old veteran of both the Mexican and Civil Wars, these early swords are quite scarce. CONDITION: Hilt-normal patina for brass, slight wear, no dents, Blade- steel color with dark spots, Scabbard-blue dulling but all there, dents on drag that do not impede the blade.
