Description

This sword is one of the many imports from Solingen,Germany during the American Civil War. The reverse ricasso is stamped with the standing knight of Wilhelm Clauberg and the obverse is faintly etched (takes real effort to read it) JAMES P. FITCH / NEW YORK. Fitch was a retailer that started in business in September, 1862. In 1863 Howard Waldo joined the firm and products were marked FITCH & WALDO. Since only Fitch’s name is on this sword, it is one sold during the few months before Waldo’s arrival. A scarce marked sword. Condition: The brass hilt has no gilt remaining, the sharkskin grip covering and wire are complete and tight. The blade is a semi bright steel color with the usual US and eagle decorations. The plain steel scabbard is browned. There are no dents or bends. Please see the pictures. Shipping is $40.00
